What to Consider When Choosing a Hearing Aid

No two cases of hearing loss are exactly alike. Types of Hearing Aid Technology

Rechargeable Hearing Aids

Traditionally, hearing aids had disposable batteries that needed to be changed regularly. Rechargeable hearing aids offer the convenience of overnight charging, just as you would recharge your smartphone or tablet device. They’re great for people who live active, on-the-go lives that don’t want to deal with the hassle of disposable batteries. Many manufacturers also offer cases that charge your devices so you can power up anywhere.

Rechargeable hearing aids have grown in popularity, and as a result, there are many varieties available on the market. Keep in mind that most rechargeable devices come in a behind-the-ear (BTE) or in-the-ear (ITE) style hearing aid, and you likely won’t find them in smaller, canal-worn styles. Additionally, rechargeable batteries typically can’t be removed, so you may be without your hearing aids if the battery component needs repairs. Most models generally take about three hours to recharge and can last a full day. 

Bluetooth 

If you frequently use a cellphone, television or other electronics, you may find Bluetooth hearing aids incredibly useful. Hearing aids with Bluetooth technology can wirelessly connect to a variety of devices, allowing you to enjoy enhanced sound quality directly from the source.

Bluetooth is available in most styles of hearing aids, including BTE, ITE and in the canal (ITC), and each manufacturer provides a different array of products and accessories that are Bluetooth-enabled. Wireless connectivity makes it easier for hearing aid users to utilize the various technologies in their everyday lives, whether you’re making phone calls, taking a virtual meeting or watching TV.

Bluetooth-compatible hearing aids sometimes have limited use of the microphone volume when connected to a device, making it hard to hear the environment around you. Bluetooth hearing aids may also require setup before use, so talk with your hearing healthcare provider if you need assistance.

Smartphone Connectivity and Apps

Hearing aids that offer Bluetooth typically come with smartphone compatibility. This feature allows you to stream calls and audio from your smartphone directly to your hearing aids. Smartphone compatible technology transforms your hearing aids into headphones, making them a great choice for hands-free phone calls.

Many hearing aid manufacturers offer smartphone apps that sync with your hearing devices. If you’re constantly moving from one environment to the next, apps can make adjusting your settings a breeze. Typically, they allow you to discreetly adjust the volume, save sound settings for specific situations and some even offer sound therapy for tinnitus. 

Water-Resistant Hearing Aids

Hearing aids work best when they are clean and dry, as moisture can damage the sensitive electronic components of a device. Sweat, humidity and rainy weather can impact your hearing aids’ performance, but luckily, technology has evolved to help make them more resilient against water damage.

Most hearing aids that offer protection from moisture are water-resistant, but not 100% waterproof. Despite not being truly waterproof, water-resistant devices can still dramatically lower the chance of damage when exposed to small amounts of moisture. They are excellent choices for people who enjoy water-related hobbies like fishing, live in humid climates or who tend to sweat more heavily. 

Hearing aids are given IP ratings to determine their resistance to dust and water. When evaluating hearing aids, talk with your provider about your lifestyle and habits. They will be able to help you choose a device with the best IP rating to suit your needs.

Battery Advice

• Extend your battery’s life. Turn off your hearing aid when not in use or open the battery door to break the circuit.
• Store batteries in a cool, dry place. Do not refrigerate as this can cause water vapor to get under the sticker and activate the battery, which can drain its power. Do not store them under excessive heat as this can also shorten battery life.
• To activate the battery, simply remove the tab, wait 30-60 seconds to allow air to enter and activate the ingredients. Today’s batteries are “zinc air” – they use air as a source of power.
• Battery life depends on the size of the battery, the drain produced by the hearing aid circuitry, hours of use per day, and listening conditions.
• Do not store batteries in your pocket or purse, as contact with other metal objects such as coins or keys can short-circuit the batteries.
• Keep batteries away from small children and pets.

Other activities that may cause hearing loss over time include: use of a personal radio/CD player/stereo/iPod player at a high volume; use of firearms; operating heavy machinery; use of power tools. The good news is that the noise in these cases is usually easily managed by turning down the volume or by wearing ear protection. Federal regulations govern allowable noise levels in the workplace, as well as the employer’s role in providing ear protection. In addition to using ear protection, those who are regularly exposed to noise should have their hearing tested regularly.

How loud is too loud

A general rule of thumb is if you have to raise your voice to be heard over the music/noise, it is too loud. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Communicable Diseases, noises above 85 decibels can cause hearing damage.

Ear Protection

Since there is no cure for noise-induced hearing loss, prevention is the sensible alternative. Modern devices which protect your hearing, from commercially available earplugs to custom-made earmolds with various filter systems, can give effective protection against noise.

Hunting:

Hunting, shooting, and sudden noise. A filter instantaneously closes when damaging noise levels are reached. Allows essentially normal hearing at all other times.

Music:

Ideal for performing musicians and concert-goers. Also great for flight attendants, bartenders, waiters, dental professionals. Allows wearer to hear sounds accurately but at reduced levels. Have 3 filter options: 9dB, 15dB or 25dB.

Swimming:

For swimming and showering – and they FLOAT! Also provide superb noise reduction.

For use with any bud/button style earphones.

Digital technology is tremendous and it allows the audiologist maximal control over the sound quality and loudness of the hearing aid. Importantly, digital technology allows the audiologist to tailor or customize the sound of your hearing aids to what you need and want to hear. Basic digital hearing aids generally require the wearer to make some manual adjustments in certain listening environments such as turning a volume control up or down, or pushing a button to change listening programs. In contrast, a premium or more advanced hearing aid responds automatically to changes in the listener’s environment, making changes bases on the signals being detected by the hearing aid. The hearing aid wearer is not required to make any manual changes. As the level of the technology increases in hearing aids, so do the availability of advanced features.

Styles of Hearing Aids

Hearing aids are available in many different sizes and styles thanks to advancements in ditital technology and miniaturization of the internal components. Many of today’s hearing aids are considered sleek, compact, and innovative – offering solutions to a wide range of hearing aid wearers.

In-the-Ear Styles

Hearing aids worn in the ear are usually custom-fit, based on a cast or impression of the ear. They’re available in different skin tones to camouflage with the outer ear. There are several styles – each is listed below, ranging from smallest to largest.

Invisible In-The-Canal (IIC)

The smallest custom style, IIC instruments sit invisibly in or past the second bend of the ear canal. IIC are specifically designed for mild to moderate hearing loss.

Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC)

The smallest custom style, CIC instruments fit deeply and entirely within the ear canal. They fit mild to moderate hearing losses and offer high cosmetic appeal as they’re nearly invisible when worn.

In-the-Canal (ITC)

ITC instruments sit in the lower portion of the outer ear bowl, making them comfortable and easy to use. Because they’re slightly larger than CIC models, they have a longer battery life, and can host additional features such as directional microphones for better understanding in noisy environments, and controls such as volume controls. They fit mild and moderate hearing losses.

Full Shell or In-the-Ear (ITE)

Full shell models sit flush within the outer ear bowl. Their size allows the maximum number of additional controls and features such as directional microphones, which require space on the outer portion of the instrument. They use a larger battery size than the smaller styles, and can fit a larger receiver with enough power for even some severe hearing losses. Because of their flexibility, they’re widely recommended for mild to severe hearing loss.

Behind-the-Ear Styles

Behind-the-Ear (BTE) models sit behind or on top of the outer ear, with tubing that routes sounds down into the ear that connects to an ear tip or earmold to secure them in the ear canal. BTEs come in colors to blend with hair or skin tones, and even chrome colors, leopard print and other funky designs to suit personal styles. Different BTE sizes accommodate different features, controls, battery types and degrees of power (larger instruments generally have more power than smaller ones). While many people choose discreet BTEs that are unnoticeable when worn, others are tempted to show off the cool designs.

Mini BTE with slim tube and tip

Mini BTEs are designed to hide behind the outer ear, and have ultra-thin tubing to discreetly route sound into the ear. The tubing connects to a soft tip that sits in the ear canal but doesn’t occlude it. The result is a natural, open feeling as airflow and sound enter the ear naturally around the tip, while amplified sound enters through the tip. This is known as “open fitting” and is recommended for mild to moderate high frequency losses.

Receiver in the ear (RITE)

RITE models, also known as RIC (receiver-in-canal) models, are mini BTEs that have the speaker of the instrument incorporated in the ear tip, instead of in the main body of the instrument. RITE instruments fit mild to severe hearing losses. This hearing aid style looks similar to the Mini BTE when worn on the ear.

BTE with earmold

BTEs with earmolds fit mild through profound hearing losses. Their longer shape follows the contour behind the outer ear and can house many features such as a program button and volume control. The earmold color and style, as well as the wearer’s hairstyle, determine exactly how they’ll look on each person.

Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA) is a technology that the FDA approved for use in 1996. As of January 2006, this device may be covered through Medicare or other insurances.

This technology is intended to aid individuals with chronic ear infections, conductive hearing losses as well as mixed hearing losses that can not be fit with a traditional hearing aid. It may also be used for individuals who suffer from single sided deafness (SSD). The BAHA is a hearing device that combines a titanium piece which is partially implanted into the skull by an otologist (ear surgeon) and a sound processor which is worn exteriorly. It is the only treatment for hearing loss that provides direct bone conduction which allows the sound to bypass the outer and middle ear and reaches the cochlea directly. We provide a BAHA consultations, evaluations and demonstrations. If you are a candidate for a BAHA, we will refer you to our qualified surgeon for the procedure.

ALDS are not just for people with hearing aids. People with all degrees and types of hearing loss – even people with normal hearing can benefit from assistive devices. Some assistive listening devices are used with hearing aids, and some are used without hearing aids.

Signaling systems

• Alarm clocks and alarm clock systems: Wake up at the right time, when traveling or at home.
• Alarm watches: A vibrating/flashing alarm watch that uses a beep alarm or vibration to get your attention.
• Light and vibration alert units: Converts acoustic signals from various output devices (telephone, doorbell etc.) into visible or tactile signals (flashing lights or a vibrating unit).
• Radio receivers: For people on the move – so that you know what’s happening at home, no matter where you are.
• Smoke detectors: 90dB horn gives early notification of the presence of smoke where both audible and visual alarms (strobe light) are required.

Amplifier units

• Cordless sound transmission system: Can be used with or without a hearing aid.
• Universal amplifier: This versatile accessory can be used to increase the volume of alarm clock signals or consumer electronics products.
• Ring loop system: Gives you wide-range sound amplification for TV, radio or headphones.
• Communication amplifier: Amplification for those who have a hearing impairment and don’t use a hearing aid.
• Amplified Electronic Stethoscope: Provides up to 24x sound amplification compared to standard non-electronic stethoscopes. Reduces 85% of unwanted background noise.

Telephone equipment
